“I love you”
It is an easy statement for some people to say, but for most of us, it’s awkward.
A few years ago, I started to question whether saying the statement was a necessary part of life. Is it necessary to tell people you love them?
Then, this verse brought me the answer:
“My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.” -1 John 3:18
It is good, encouraged and necessary for us to tell people that we love them. Love in speech can also be speaking well to people, kindly, patiently, sharing The Word of God.
Personally, I like to think of saying ‘I love you’ in the following manner:
‘Love’ is a verb. It is what you do. You love someone today, you will love them tomorrow.
Therefore, when I tell someone ‘I love you’, it is a fact, it is a reiteration of what I have been showing you. The words simply confirm the way I act towards you. It is a cherry on a cake that is made of action. When someone says, “I love you”, you should already know by what they have been doing, their intentions; it should not contradict what you have observed.
Simply put: The words emphasize the action.
“So when you tell me you love me, I know. You loved me yesterday, the day before. You listen to me, you care for me, you’re kind to me… you love me every day.”- Clichés
Don’t forget that love is also an action to yourself. Love yourself, take care of yourself and speak well to yourself. You can only love others as much as you love yourself.
“I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell”- 1 Corinthians 13:1
