Lesson 11- Academics and life

Writer's picture: LindiLindi

I come from a place in my life where academics was the majority of what I did. I would spend hours trying to do everything 'perfectly' (unattainable). I ended up having a lousy social life, and in a lousy mental state too. I also neglected my sleeping patterns (which I'm currently trying to work on).

A lecturer once said,

"You have 24 hours in a day: 8 hours to sleep; 8 hours to work; 8 hours to play."

It may not be exactly like that, but he emphasized balance and moderation.

Think about spinach...

Spinach is really good for you, but imagine if ALL you ate was spinach. You would be malnourished. One must have proteins, carbohydrates and everything else to be healthy.

Basically, academics is the spinach; it is essential, but you need the others too.

My aunt once told me,

"You learn more out of the classroom than inside."

What she was conveying was that I would have to get out more.

You learn more about life when you live it. When you go outside and talk to people, hear what others have to say and go on adventures, you learn more about life than behind a textbook. Though, the textbook probably helps you live much better.

I am sort of a hypocrite right now, as I am a recovering workaholic who still has a sad social life. However, it remains a pretty good lesson.

"My son, there is something else to watch out for. There is no end to the writing of books, and too much study will wear you out. After all this, there is only one thing to say: Have reverence for God, and obey His commands, because this is all that human beings were created for." -Ecclesiastes 12: 12-13
